Terry Winters was born in 1949 in Brooklyn, New York, and completed his BFA degree from Pratt Institute in 1971. His first exhibition at the Sonnabend Gallery in 1982 helped him become well-known among the New York art scene. A prolific painter, draughtsman, and printmaker, Winters exhibited extensively with his contemporaries throughout the 80s and 90s. In 1992, the Whitney Museum of American held a major survey of his work. Since then, his work has been shown in several major museums across the globe, including the Tate Gallery, London; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin.
